Welcome to the Midwifery Programs at Birthwise Midwifery SchoolBirthwise offers two arrangements of its curriculum to meet the needs of our diverse student body: the Original Program and the Apprenticeship Program. Both programs are MEAC accredited offer the same curriculum and prepare students to sit for the national certification exam to become Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs). Explore your options here to see which arrangement works best for you. The Apprenticeship Program is designed for those who do not want to relocate to Maine for the academic program. The academic program is delivered in 10 two-week intensives over a two-year period while the student is working with a midwife in her home community. This is followed by an additional year of Preceptorship. This program will be offered again starting July, 2010. Application deadline for our 2010 class is January 15, 2010. Our Original Midwifery Program begins each September and meets 2-3 days per week. Students begin local clincal rotations in their second and third semester and begin transitioning into their full time preceptorship during the fourth semester by working with a midwife in the New England region and returning to Birthwise for classes once a month. The fifth and sixth semesters are the Preceptorship, where the bulk of the student's clinical experience will be obtained. Students do not attend classes at Birthwise during the Preceptorship. The application deadline for the Original Program is April 1st-- this class is filling fast so we recommend applying soon! Late applications are accepted on a space-available basis.
